Cassi Van Den Dungen denies calling home town a `ghetto’

The family of a teenage Sunbury model has claimed she did not call her hometown "a ghetto" and apologised to residents for any misunderstanding.

Cassi Van Den Dungen, a finalist on Australia’s Next Top Model, caused fury in Sunbury after she was reported to have said: "Sunbury’s a good place to grow up in but if you get in with the wrong groups of people, it’s kind of like a ghetto for you."

The definition of a ghetto is “a slum area occupied by a particular group".

But Cassi’s grandfather, Joe Francese, came to her defence when he said the angry 16-year-old had spoken to her mother in the US and denied making the ghetto claim.

"Cassi has always loved living in Sunbury and insisted she never called Sunbury a ghetto; she has no idea what a ghetto is," he said.

"Yes, she’s had a few problems in Sunbury, but her mother was always very active in the community and Cassi apologises if anything was taken out of context.

"She’s just a 16-year-old kid like any normal teenager."

But Sydney Daily Telegraph TV editor Erin McWhirter, who interviewed Cassi, insists the teenager used the word "ghetto" while describing Sunbury.

Hume Mayor Jack Ogilvie, who has been stopped in the street by furious residents, said he accepted Cassi’s apology.

"My phone has rung red hot since her comments came out and I was pretty upset as I’ve done a lot for the youth of Sunbury," he said.

"I think we all make mistakes at 16, but Sunbury really is a great place to live."

Fellow Sunbury councillor Ann Potter said ghettos existed in India, not Sunbury.

"Sixteen-year-olds are pretty immature and sometimes don’t think before they speak and also don’t really know the true meaning or implications of their comments," she said.

"It’s my belief that the TV show is spilling out some comments to gain extra publicity for their program and that’s disappointing."

Before making her television debut tonight, Cassi admitted she drank regularly and was engaged to a man alsmot 10 years older.

She put her hyperactive nature and fiery temper down to a turbulent upbringing in Sunbury.

Her parents divorced when she was six months old and she dropped out of school last year.

Our "SWEET 16" finalist on Australia's Next Top Model has revealed she is engaged to a man nearly 10 years her senior and is a regular drinker.

Cassi Van Den Dungen spoke about her engagement to bricklayer Brad Saul, 25, as she was ordered into anger management counselling this week by the reality TV show's producers.

Cassi, who said she met Mr Saul while having drinks with friends 21 months ago, describes herself as a "Jim Beam and Coke person".

Saul popped the question while the teenager was filming the Foxtel reality TV show in Sydney earlier this year.

She moved in with her lover a little over a month ago after filming finished and after her mother relocated to the US for work.

"Our relationship is really weird and it's different to everyone else's because I am so annoying and drive people insane but he puts up with it," Cassi said yesterday.

"We met through a friend of ours and went out for drinks that night and then three months later I had a bad day and called him up.

"We went out for more drinks another night and then I ended up kissing him. He proposed on the phone while I was in the Top Model house.

"I was freaked, but said, 'Yes'. He's saving for the ring."

Before making her TV debut on April 28, Cassi Van Den Dungen was already causing a stir, with fellow contestants and mentor Jonathan Pease nicknaming her the show's resident "bogan".

Cassi puts her hyperactive nature and fiery temper down to a turbulent upbringing.

Her mother and father divorced when she was six months old. She spent weekends with her father but, when her mother remarried, she did not get on with her stepfather.

"It was tough living with him. Mum isn't with him any more," she said.

Cassi dropped out of school last year and said she had been mixed up with the wrong crowd in her hometown of Sunbury, Victoria.

"I go in and out of being in the wrong crowd but when I was in the wrong crowd I was wagging school and getting into trouble. I was a rebel," she said.

"I was a devil child. I went to a private school for two years and I hated it and I ended up getting myself kicked out because Mum wouldn't let me leave.

"Sunbury is a good place to grow up in but if you get in with the wrong groups of people it's kind of like a ghetto for you."

I really don't think that the photo accompanying this story really does Cassi justice, it does make the scenario of her being a brickies wife more plausible though ;o)

Cassi Van Den Dungen has been ordered to have anger management counselling.
The temper of aspiring model Cassi Van Den Dungen is exposed in episode one when the 16-year-old yelled, "F..." during a public fashion parade.

She then punched a wall and threatened to "rip" off another contestant's head.

Cassi's most shocking outburst will be showcased in episode three when fellow contestant Lola Van Vorst, 20, deviously steals her competitor's line during a shoot for a TV advertisement.

The incident left a fuming Cassi so angry she punched a nearby wall and said, "She's lucky this isn't her."

Fellow contestant Mikarla Hussey, 18, said before the program's premiere on Foxtel next Tuesday: "Everyone knows Cassi is like a firecracker. It is just like a bomb."

The wayward teenager, who has been expelled from one private school in Victoria and quit Sunbury College after skipping lessons there last year, said she is sorry the incident happened but believes counselling was unnecessary.

"I wanted to throw Lola off the car park, I was so angry," said Van Den Dungen, who admitted to being involved in several playground punch-ups in the past.

Sarah Murdoch, who has taken the hosting reins for the fifth season, said the only option was counselling.

The new host said a more hands-on approach was adopted with the wannabe catwalk princesses this year following the controversy over last season's winner Demelza Reveley bullying Alamela Rowan.

"Cassi's way to cope with the pressure was to lash out and you couldn't just leave this girl like that," said Murdoch, 36.

"She needed to learn general life skills.

"Cassi is one of those girls who could easily get swept up in the wrong situation and crowds.

"She had to learn this is the real world; they aren't at school any more."
